Remembering the Constant One
January 30, 2014“The works of the Lord are great, sought out by all those who have delight in them. His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever. He has made His wonderful works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious, merciful, and full of loving compassion.” ~ Ps 111: 2-4 AMP
Why is it that our hearts are prone to unbelief? Why is it that the world or we in the Body of Christ do not see more of a constant stream of the mighty works of God? Why is it that being content in life with what God has graciously given become a byword for many who profess faith in the Lord Jesus christ?
These things are not for a lack of God actually working in our world. They are evidences of our forgetfullness of God and his constant working on our behalf. In the scripture we are constantly exhorted to remember God’s works. We are told to speak of them among the nations and among ourselves. It is when we forget the works that God has done that we go astray from the Lord as the Israelites of old did.
“And time and again they turned back and tempted God, provoking and incensing the Holy One of Israel. They remembered not [seriously the miracles of the working of] His hand, nor the day when He delivered them from the enemy, How He wrought His miracles in Egypt and His wonders in the field of Zoan [where Pharaoh resided]” ~ Ps. 78:41-43 AMP
Every work that God has performed on our behalf points us to Himself that we may in greater degrees have our hearts turned to Him in adoration. When we recall the deeds of the hand of God in our lives we have a reference to share each mighty work recalled with our neighbor, our faith in God is bolstered and we are brought into a spiritual state of mind that if rightly used will keep our hearts safe from a spiral of decay. Charles Spurgeon said this:
“Much of God’s praise is never made known on this earth for lack of a ready pen to record the gracious experiences of His people. The keeping of a diary is very apt to lead to a stilted form of piety. If a man feels that he must put something down every day, he is very liable to put down that which is not true. He may think it is true even when it is really false. But the recording of the many special mercies that we receive from God appears to me to be a duty which we owe to our age and also to our successors. If some of the wonderful deliverances which are recorded in the biographies of the saints had not been jotted down at the time, we would have been great losers. And if we have anything worth recording and I think we have, even if we do not care to write it down to be seen by the public eye, yet, at least, let us record it for the sake of the little circle in which we live and move, that, perhaps, some of our descendants, or some of our friends may gather comfort from our personal experience of God’s mercy. “He has made His wonderful works to be remembered.” Let us act in harmony with this grand design and preserve the memory of the Lord’s great goodness to us!” ~ Charles Spurgeon, Remembering the Works of God – Sermon #2849
